You’ve probably heard about gingivitis but do you really know what it is? Do you know what causes it or what it does to your teeth? Do we know how to treat the problem, or even better, know how to prevent it? If you’re interested in learning more about this issue, please read on.

Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease caused by a buildup of plaque on the tissue that surrounds your teeth. Sadly, this issue can affect everyone. Fortunately, there are a few signs and symptoms you can watch for—including pain and discomfort, and red, swollen, or bleeding gums. However, you may not be able to identify any symptoms, making it difficult to treat the disease adequately.

If you do have gingivitis or gum disease, home remedies won’t do much. Unfortunately, if you do try to care for it at home the bacteria from the plaque can enter your bloodstream causing worse problems. This can be very dangerous and lead to issues such as head disease, respiratory problems, and high blood pressure.

To avoid these problems, we recommend scheduling an appointment with our team right away. We recommend visiting our practice once every six months so our team can inspect the health of your gums.

If you are worried about gingivitis, please don’t hesitate to contact Alaska Dental Associates at 907-562-2284. Dr. Kyle M. Triggs and our team look forward to hearing from you soon!
